Big Apple Bagels: Crafting Fresh Traditions in Bakery-Cafés

Big Apple Bagels is a popular American bakery-café franchise known for its commitment to freshness and variety. Founded in 1993 in the United States, the company quickly gained recognition for its high-quality bagels and expanded its offerings to include a full menu of sandwiches, soups, salads, and muffins.

It is headquartered in Deerfield, Illinois, and has maintained its reputation for warm, welcoming service and a made-from-scratch approach to baking. The franchise began offering franchising opportunities shortly after its founding and has since grown into a recognizable brand across various states.

In addition to its signature bagels, Big Apple Bagels also features Brewster’s Coffee, smoothies, frozen yogurt, and even pizza in select locations, catering to a wide range of tastes and meal occasions.

What truly sets Big Apple Bagels apart from competitors is its dedication to freshness. Bagels and muffins are baked in-house every day using proprietary mixes and recipes, which gives each location a handcrafted, small-batch feel that appeals to loyal customers.

Training

The Big Apple Bagels franchise provides multiple types of training programs to support its franchisees:

  1. Initial Training Program: The Franchisor provides an initial training program to the Franchisee and one additional person designated by the Franchisee. This program covers all aspects of store operations including unit operations, bookkeeping, inventory management, and local store marketing. It lasts a minimum of ten days and may take place at a designated store, the Franchisor’s corporate location, virtually, or at the Franchisee's store near the opening date.
  2. Satellite Store Training: For franchisees opening a Satellite Store, the Franchisor may require additional Satellite Store training. If not mandatory, the franchisee has the option to participate. This program lasts a minimum of three days and is intended for existing franchisees expanding to a new location.
  3. Manager Training: If a franchisee requests the Franchisor to train their manager, a Manager Training Fee applies. Franchisees must also establish an employee training program at their store that meets Franchisor standards.

Territory Protection

Big Apple Bagels provides territory protection only under an Area Development Agreement. In this case, the franchisee receives a “Protected Development Area” where no other BAGELS stores can be opened, as long as development obligations are met.

Under a standard Franchise Agreement, there is no exclusive territory. Franchisees may face competition from other franchisees, company-owned stores, or alternative distribution channels.
